The capture in Cerignola of Tommaso Morra , a fugitive for months and believed to be a leading member of the so-called Cerignola batteries specializing in robberies of armored vehicles , has sparked political reactions. Among them is Giandonato La Salandra , a member of the Brothers of Italy party for Foggia, who expressed his appreciation for the police in a statement.

"I applaud the capture in Cerignola of fugitive Tommaso Morra, already sentenced to 12 years and 6 months in prison," said La Salandra. The MP recalled that Morra was a dangerous criminal, previously implicated in the raid on the Mondialpol vault in Calcinato, in the province of Brescia, where a commando unit armed with Kalashnikovs, submachine guns, pistols, and shotguns was ready to strike before the police intervened.

Morra and the Cerignola batteries

Morra had been sentenced to 12 years and 6 months in prison for the attempted robbery of the Calcinato vault in March 2022, but had been unavailable since last February to avoid serving his sentence. He still had nine and a half years of prison remaining. His capture, after months of investigation and shadowing, represents a severe blow to the Cerignola gangs, criminal groups that have been active for years in high-impact armed operations in various Italian regions.
